Pool Rules

The purpose of these rules is to help ensure the safety of all pool patrons at the Cleveland Park Club (CPC). By signing up as a Voting Member, all members of a household acknowledge acceptance of these pool rules.

Policies and Rules for the Pool

The pool policies and rules are in place so that members can have fun and be safe at the Cleveland Park Club (CPC).

Arrival

1. Members over the age of 7 must check in at the pool welcome desk.

2. Guest Passes must be purchased for any non-member visiting the pool. Each guest pass is valid for one guest for one day. All guests must be accompanied by a Member.  Members may purchase guest passes in advance under the Member's profile and they will be deducted from Members' accounts upon check-in.  Members may also purchase guest passes on the spot by utilizing a QR code posted at the lifeguard stand. Unused guest passes may be used in future years.

3. Any adult visiting the pool for the purpose of providing childcare (nannies, au pairs, occasional babysitters, visiting relatives, etc.) will be admitted free of charge (i.e. no guest pass needed) when accompanying a Member’s child.

Kids

4. Parents and guardians have primary responsibility for the safety and whereabouts of their children while at the pool.  Campers must be accompanied by a designated Club or camp staff member or counselor while on the pool deck or in the pool.  Children aged 9 and under must always be accompanied and supervised by an adult while in the pool or on the pool deck. Children aged 10 and over may come to the pool and swim unaccompanied by an adult only after they have passed the Club’s water safety test.

5. Please park strollers, scooters, and bikes in the bike rack area outside the pool area.  Strollers or other non-ADA wheeled devices are not permitted inside the pool gate.

6. Babies and toddlers wearing swim diapers under swimwear are allowed in the main pool and toddler pool. Please regularly check the diapers and keep kids experiencing diarrhea out of the pool.  Swim diapers and/or soiled diapers must be disposed of in a proper receptacle. Do not flush diapers in the toilet. If a child wearing swim diapers leaks fecal matter into the pool, that child’s parents or guardians will pay for all costs associated with pool closure and disinfectant procedure.

7. The toddler pool is only for children aged 5 and younger. The toddler pool is not supervised by the lifeguards. Use of the toddler pool requires supervision by a parent or guardian.

8. Throwing sand and using water in the sandbox are prohibited. Children must shower off all sand before entering either pool.

9. All children aged 14 and younger are required to take the Club’s safety swim test each season to swim in the deep end of the pool. This includes children who have previously taken and passed the test - no exceptions. Lifeguards will maintain a log of all Club members, guests and campers, age 14 and under, and their test status. Those passing the test will be issued a wrist/ankle band indicating they may swim in the deep end. Wrist/ankle bands should be kept and used throughout the summer. Lost or damaged wrist/ankle bands can be replaced by lifeguards. Children who have not passed the water safety test shall be prohibited from the deep end of the pool, even when accompanied by an adult. The only exception to this rule is during swim instruction.

The swim test, which will be administered by a lifeguard, when a lifeguard is available to safely administer the test, is:
    A) Swimmer treads water in the deep end for 60 seconds (timed by the   lifeguard) with head above water for the entire duration.
    B) When the lifeguard indicates 60 seconds are over, the swimmer immediately swims the length of the pool, taps the shallow end wall without touching the bottom of the pool, and swims back to the deep end wall.

10. Small flotation devices (non-inflatable) worn as an aid while swimming in the main pool are permitted. All children using them must have a parent present in the pool and within arm's reach of the child. Children who have not passed the water safety test shall be prohibited from the deep end of the pool, even if accompanied by an adult. The Club may have flotation devices for member use; see the lifeguard for availability and use.

11. Members aged 15 and older may swim laps during “Adult Swim”, although members 18 and older receive preference if space in the pool is limited. At the discretion of the lifeguard, members aged 15 to 17 may be asked to exit the pool during “Adult Swim” as a courtesy to swimmers aged 18 and over.

Pool Availability

12. The gate-controlled pool area (pool and upper deck area) may be closed for private events or camp hours. The lower deck, play area, and club house porch are generally still available during those times.

13. Use of the pool during closed periods or in the absence of a qualified lifeguard employed by the Club is prohibited.

14. The pool may be closed at any time due to weather conditions, equipment failure, or any DC code violations, including overcrowding. The pool capacity is 29 bathers.

15. In the event of a thunderstorm, the pool lifeguards will close the pool for a period of 30 minutes for thunder and/or lightning from the last time either is heard or seen by a lifeguard. If it is only raining, the lifeguards will remain on duty unless they cannot see the bottom of the pool (main drain) at which point the pool will be closed until the lifeguards can see the bottom of the pool.

Enjoying the Shared Space

16. Disruptive games and other pool activity may be limited, stopped, or prohibited at the discretion of the lifeguards.

17. Water guns, sports equipment and balls (footballs, tennis balls, volley balls, etc.) are not permitted at the pool. Use of any poolside basketball net is at the discretion of the lifeguards who may prohibit its use if it is disruptive or unsafe for others.

18. Running on the pool deck, stunt diving (including back dives, front flips, and jumps with twists), diving in the shallow end, excessive roughness, dunking, and other similar behavior is prohibited. Forward diving is permitted in the 7-foot section of the deep end of the pool.

19. Persons with infections or signs of other high contamination risks such as skin rashes or eruptions, open sores of any kind, or nasal or ear discharges may not use the pool.

20. Music devices without headphones are not permitted at the pool.

Food and Drink

21. No glassware or breakables are permitted on any areas surrounding the pool, including on the concrete and decks. Only bottles and cans of drinking water are allowed on the concrete pool decks. Other, non-alcoholic, beverages are permitted on the decks (upper and lower).

22. Alcoholic beverages are permitted on the upper and lower decks, Club grounds, and on the Clubhouse porch. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the concrete pool deck. Intoxication or the appearance of intoxication is not permitted. Members intoxicated or displaying the appearance of intoxication will be asked to leave the premises.

23. Food is not allowed on the concrete pool decks. Eating is allowed on the Clubhouse porch, Club grounds, and pool decks (upper and lower). All members and guests are responsible for disposing of their own trash in a proper receptacle. Pizza boxes and other large items are NOT to be placed in the pool deck receptacles and MUST be walked to the front of the Clubhouse for recycling and/or disposal.

General

24. All Club members and their guests using the pool, pool decks, or bathhouse facilities do so at their own risk. The Club assumes no responsibility for any loss or damage to personal property.

25. Lifeguards are instructed by the Club's Board of Directors or their designee to interpret and enforce all rules governing the use of the pool, pool decks, and bathhouse facilities. Lifeguards have ultimate discretion in enforcing the rules and maintaining safety. Everyone using the pool must follow the lifeguards' instructions.

26. The primary duty of the lifeguards is to make sure the pool and deck area is safe and monitored in case of an emergency. At minimum, one lifeguard is required to be monitoring the pool while the pool is occupied. If a lifeguard is not on the pool deck, the pool is considered closed until the guard returns. When approaching a lifeguard for a non-emergency issue, check to see if it is a safe time to talk. During peak periods, lifeguards may ask you to wait until adult swim or their break before responding to your inquiry. Loitering near the lifeguard stations or check-in area is not permitted.

Any comments, concerns, or suggestions about the pool and/or lifeguards should be made to manager@clevelandparkclub.org.
